Selective Change Driven Imaging: A Biomimetic Visual Sensing Strategy

Selective change driven (SCD) Vision is a biologically inspired strategy for acquiring, transmitting and processing images that significantly speeds up image sensing. SCD vision is based on a new CMOS image sensor which delivers, ordered by the absolute magnitude of its change, the pixels that have changed after the last time they were read out. Moreover, the traditional full frame processing h...

Biomimetic Visual Sensing and Flight Control

There is increased interest in new classes of miniand micro-UAVs with sizes ranging from one meter to ten centimeters. Many envisioned applications of such UAVs require them to be able to fly close to the ground in complex environments. The difficulties associated with flying in such environments coupled with the reduced payload capacity of such airframes means that new methods of sensing and c...

Biomimetic supercontainers for size-selective electrochemical sensing of molecular ions

New ionophores are essential for advancing the art of selective ion sensing. Metal-organic supercontainers (MOSCs), a new family of biomimetic coordination capsules designed using sulfonylcalix[4]arenes as container precursors, are known for their tunable molecular recognition capabilities towards an array of guests. Herein, we demonstrate the use of MOSCs as a new class of size-selective ionop...

A simple strategy for charge selective biopolymer sensing.

Polysaccharide-induced protein fluorescence 'turn-on' responses have been studied in the presence of similarly charged micelle at pH ∼3. Quenched protein fluorescence is selectively recovered ('on' state) for bovine serum albumin (BSA) with sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (SCMC) and for pepsin (PS) with chitosan (CS) with starting ultra low concentrations of 0.04 μM and 0.008 μM respectively.

Biomimetic Tactile Sensing

Tactile sensing is an essential component in many applications such as robotics, haptics, rehabilitation, electrotextiles, prosthetics and many more. In the light of greater focus on man-machine interaction, the importance of artificial tactile sensing as an important feedback tool is also growing. Starting with an overview of tactile sensing, in humans and robots, this chapter presents artific...
